Stepping out in faith, Carrie and Andy Macfarlan opened Smooth Skin Laser in 2010. As their expertise grew, clients asked for more services and they responded in 2019 by adding skin rejuvenation, scar minimization and tattoo removal. The staff is like family (well, some are!) and when Kelly Crispens Thomas moved to Richmond, they were excited to open the Richmond office in 2022.
Simply put, they love helping clients achieve their goals through laser hair removal, tattoo removal and skin rejuvenation.
Kelly is a nationally-certified Laser Professional who joined the Smooth Skin Laser family in December 2016. A Charlottesville native and UVA grad, Kelly moved to Richmond to open Smooth Skin RVA in 2022. She loves building relationships with her clients and being a part of their journey to becoming more confident and comfortable in their own skin (or just a little less hairy!).
Brett has been a nationally-certified laser professional since 2020 with a background in skincare and cosmetics since 2013. She lives in Stony Point, where she and her husband, Hodges, raise/raised their big, beautiful, blended family of 7 children and too many pets to count. She loves hearing her clients’ life stories and is especially motivated to help them feel confident in their own skin.
Mariko is a true renaissance woman! She is a nationally certified laser technician by Allied Beauty Experts (ABE) and her attention to detail is a great asset in the clinical setting. After spending more than 18 years in Charlottesville, Mariko considers herself a “townie.” Even so, she will always have a deep love for Pittsburgh and her Penn State Nittany Lions. Mariko is so grateful to be a part of Team Smooth Skin seeing it as a gift to work with such an amazing team and clients! You can also occasionally find Mariko onstage and in the choreographer's chair at some of Charlottesville's local community theaters, though her favorite new role that she has stepped into recently is the role of Mom.
Brinn has been a dedicated public school teacher since 2016, bringing the same care and attention to detail from the classroom to the treatment room. Her journey with the family business began in high school, working alongside her mom, Carrie (the owner), during summers and school breaks. Inspired by her love for helping people feel confident in their skin, Brinn became a nationally certified ABE Laser Professional in 2021.
She now offers appointments on Tuesday evenings and select Saturdays, combining her passion for education and wellness to provide a comfortable, informed, and effective laser experience. Brinn is fluent in Spanish.

Mary came to Charlottesville in 2003 as an undergraduate student at UVA and never left! She completed all of her medical training at UVA and tacked on a degree in public health as well. She has served as a family physician since 2016; first at Albemarle Square Family Healthcare, and later as part of Sentara Family Medicine at Belvedere. She joined Smooth Skin Laser as a supervising physician in 2022 and loves working with “an amazing group of people who take pride in their work and truly show love to their clients.” Mary rounds out her time working at UVA Student Health, and putting her public health degree to use by volunteering at the Charlottesville Free Clinic.
Nancy has been a fan (and client!) of Smooth Skin Laser from the beginning and joined the team in 2020. She is a self-described “people person” with a wide range of experiences in marketing, fundraising and community service. Fun fact: every member of her immediate family is a client.
Carrie received her National Laser Professional Certification from Allied Beauty Experts (ABE) in 2005. Since then, serving the people of Charlottesville through laser hair removal has become one of her greatest joys. In her down time, Carrie loves spending time with family and dear friends, traveling with her husband (our Medical Director), looking after her 11 grandchildren, and walking in the woods with her golden retriever, Max.
Dr. Andy practiced as a family physician in the Charlottesville area for over 40 years. He retired from primary care medicine in 2020 and turned his full medical attention to Smooth Skin Laser. In addition to serving as Medical Director, he operates the PicoSure laser treating fine lines and wrinkles, brown spots, acne, reducing scars, and removing tattoos. He was previously selected to Best Doctors in America by peer surveys. "Working alongside my wife is a true joy and blessing."

The GentleLASE®, GentleYAG®, and the Vectus® deliver fast, safe, reliable, permanent hair removal with minimal discomfort. The GentleLASE is for lighter skin types and the GentleYAG is ideal for darker pigmented skin or after sun exposure. The Vectus, a diode laser, is effective on all skin types and is used for covering larger areas in less time. It is also effective for lighter, finer hair.
The PicoSure® laser is a 755nm Alexandrite laser that fires in repeated pico-second bursts (trillionths of a second) and stimulates the body's stem cells to help reduce unwanted pigment, acne scars, fine lines, wrinkles and sun damage. It is the best machine for tattoo removal.
